Liesbeth Jusia: Combining The Material And Spiritual World

Liesbeth Jusia works as a freelance professional, former legal counsel, and is working as a spiritualist medium and tutor for personal and intuitive development for many years now. Aside from this, Liesbeth also has been involved in raising awareness and promoting a stronger sense of self of young adolescents to help them discover their potential and encourage them to express it. Since 2015 she is a volunteer coach for JINC, coaching groups of high school students at various schools in Amsterdam. I met Liesbeth when I took one of her courses for mediumship, and was very enthusiastic about her down to earth approach. Just like her, I view spirituality and intuitive qualities as something ‘natural’ we all possess, just like musicality, that not everyone develops to the same degree. Curious to hear more about her, and her unusual work combination of legal counsel and spiritualist medium, I decided to sit with Liesbeth for an interview.

YOU ARE COACHING STUDENTS AT VARIOUS SCHOOLS FOR SOME YEARS NOW. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE THE ORGANIZATION OF SCHOOLS?

I would love to see more focus and attention to personal development. Not only having a history class, but also a ‘future’ class: who are you, what are your talents, more insight into what living actually means, and what things you can encounter when you ‘grow up’ and that nothing ever really stays the same. Also, I feel like there is a need to have more awareness for enhancing children’s resilience and flexibility, which is so much needed in a time of fast -technological/digital- change, and changes on the labour market.

YOUR WORK AS SPIRITUALIST MEDIUM TAKES YOU TO MANY PLACES. HOW HAVE YOU BEEN INFLUENCED BY DIFFERENT CULTURES?

I have travelled a lot, and I am always open and curious for new people and different experiences. I prefer to leave as unprepared as possible, because that brings me the best experiences. It makes my life so much richer, and helps me with being a medium. All experiences are stored somewhere in my mind. When I do my demonstrations or consultations it makes my interpretations much richer. I have to say though that Amsterdam, the city I was born and raised, has been one of the few places I experience so much freedom and creative energy.

YOUR ROOTS ARE FROM BANGLADESH, DO YOU FEEL AS IF YOU ARE EXPRESSING THESE ROOTS?

I have been very aware of my roots. Especially with my great grand mother, Mohun Jusia, I have always felt a connection. When she was 13 she had been transported to Surinam on a boat as contract worker, you could view her as an avatar of The Slavery. The last time I was visiting India I was looking for a monument for contract workers, but I could not find it. I did however had a special trip through Kolkata because of it. And when I was standing on the Howrah bridge, that lays over the Hoogly river, where all ships with contract workers left, I shed a silent tear. Not only because of my grief over her, but also because of gratitude: the fact that I got to live in a different country and not one of the poorest of the world.. Freedom to me means a lot. I really see myself as a free spirited person. It is something I have felt from a young age. It is strange, it seems as if I have been molded by my ancestors in that point of view.

YOU WORKED FULL TIME AT ALLEN & OVERY (INTERNATIONAL LAW FIRM) BUT YOU ALSO COACH PEOPLE. HOW DO YOU KEEP YOURSELF BALANCED IN LIFE?

Luckily I have a lot of self-discipline and I am good at setting boundaries. This means saying no as well! Really taking the time for yourself when you need it, and not doing things because you are supposed to or you have to do them… For a lot of people this is difficult, but you can only be there for yourself and others if you really take the time for yourself! Other than that I love doing sports, singing, and recently playing guitar. Lastly, I also like to take the time to tune in with myself, getting back to base.

AND HOW DO YOU COMBINE THE MATERIAL AND SPIRITUAL WORLD? (AND HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR WORK WITH BEING HIGH SENSITIVE)

I do not view them as two separate worlds, which works very well for me, however that is very personal. Keeping the balance is mainly about setting clear boundaries for yourself and choosing how much you let something or someone get into you. Energy is different in different places and with different people, and sometimes it comes in stronger than other times.

IF YOU CHANGE THE COURSE OF YOUR LIFE, HOW DO YOU MAKE YOUR CHOICES? ARE THEY DETERMINED BY YOUR INTUITION MOSTLY?

The first question I ask myself is: is this good for me, what is it bringing me and what can I bring in myself? I am not someone who thinks very long-term. Most of the choices I made in live have been intuitive. Is it feeling right or not? I call it “clear-knowing”, you just know if something is right or wrong, you don’t even have to think about it for too long. It is clear in a split second!

DO YOU BELIEF IN FREE WILL OR DESTINY?

I definitely believe in free will (meaning people who are able to express themselves freely, and not people that are constrained in a certain way) and I am convinced that we all have our essence, our blue print (with traits, talents and interests), that we can not deny. In that way it seems predestined who we are, but how you construct your life and how you express this essence is up to you. Whenever we are not expressing ourselves, from my experience, this is when people start to feel worse, and happen to fall ill and so on…

AND HOW DO YOU ‘READ’ THE COURSE THAT YOUR INTUITION IS SETTING OUT FOR YOU?

In my opinion intuition works different with every person. For me what really helped is that I am interested in so many things, and in that way my intuition expresses itself in different ways. Sometimes it’s through music, sometimes an image (like a photo or a short movie I see something happening) or just something I feel. Also, I always kept a diary, sometimes just with a few words, to see better how information is coming to me. Personally I experience everything very directly, so no symbols, basically what you see/hear/feel is what you get. I think this has to do with my personality, interests and work. My credo would be: cut the crap.
